10 Easy Ways To Use Less Water

Water is a vital part of our lives, but climate change is here and is impacting our access to sufficient water supplies. And while our water resources are decreasing, we are also increasing in numbers. According to the World Bank report titled ‘Climate Risk Country Profile’ published in 2021, Egypt has a population of 100.3 million people as of 2019, with an annual population growth rate of 2.0% that is projected to reach 120.8 million people by 2030 and 159.9 million by 2050. This population growth aggravates the problem even further.

Morocco is also suffering from water stress due primarily to population growth, and a reduction in rainfall, and an increase in temperature. According to an article published by Morocco World News in 2024, a per person share of water is less than 600 cubic meters annually, which is well below the international “water poverty line” of 1000 cubic meters per capita. While both countries have set national strategies to adapt to climate change and counter decreasing water resources, it is also important for citizens to be aware of the problem and take action by using water efficiently and smartly at home.

So, what are ten easy ways for us to save water in our daily lives? First thing you have to do is to immediately review your daily consumption patterns and start a smart plan to reduce water consumption in your daily activities. Here’s what you can do differently:

1. Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth

You can save liters of water by just turning off the tap for a few minutes while you brush your teeth. Alternatively, you can just wet your brush and fill a glass for rinsing your mouth and this way you will save even more water. Remember to turn off the tap while shaving as well. 

2. Take shorter showers

A typical shower uses five to ten gallons of water a minute; just reducing three minutes off an eight-minute shower time will help you to conserve about 7.5 gallons. Best thing is to start timing your showers, and then once you know how much you spend on average in the shower, start cutting them down by a few minutes. 

3. Every drop counts – check your faucets

Fixing leaky taps at home will also save tens of liters of water from being wasted every day. It is very easy to fix leaky faucets, and pretty straight forward so do not let water just running, call you plumber right away! 

4. Grab a Bucket and Wash your Car

Make smart choices when washing your car, wash your car with a bucket of water instead of using a hose, by just doing that you will save huge volumes of water. Sometimes the car might also need just a good scrub with a wet cloth. 

5. It’s time to replace your hose with a broom

Instead of using a hose to clean your driveways, pavements and steps, and wasting hundreds of gallons of water, try using smarter options that don’t waste water such as a broom. Of course you can also use a mop rinsed with water for a final glow. 

6. Wash your fruits and vegetables smartly, and save water.

In the kitchen, rinse your fruits and vegetables in a bowl full of clean water, or in the kitchen sink, instead of turning the tap on them. This helps save over 10 liters of water and will surly cut down on your water bill. You will be immensely pleased with yourself when you find out how much money you saved. 

7. Consider buying water-efficient bathroom fixtures 

Low-flow bathroom fixtures such as showerheads or faucets will reduce the amount of water used in the bathroom in comparison to a high-flow shower head which used large volumes of water 

8. Regularly check for water leaks 

It is very important to regularly check kitchen pipes and the dishwasher hose for leaks and fix them right away. Also make sure all faucets are completely turned off and no water is dripping. 

9. Only use the washing machine for full loads

You have to be aware that automatic washing machine uses 30 to 35 gallons per cycle, so use it smartly to save water by using it only for full loads. Also most washing machines have different programs with different timings. Go for a quick half an hour wash if you are washing items that just need a quick thorough wash instead of choosing 2 hour programs. 

10. Use a wash basin for your few items instead of the washing machine

It is recommended if you have just a few items that you need to wash, to just wash them in a washing basin full of water and detergent. It is a very simply process that does not consume time or effort, and more importantly you will be saving water. 

Following these simple tips can help save you can reduce your in-home water use by 35%. This means the average household, which uses 130,000 gallons per year, could save 44,000 gallons of water per year. On a daily basis, the average household, using 350 gallons per day, could save 125 gallons of water per day. Saving water is every individual’s role and it is societal effort.

Make these simple changes in your daily water consumption, because every drop that you save counts. Moreover by using water smartly and efficiently every day you will save a lot of money every month on your water bills.
